Chapter 120 The Birth of the Rose Knight
Chapter 120 The Birth of the Rose Knight
The day after Gebu narrowly escaped death.
Around ten o'clock, Chifang Town fully woke up. The square was bustling with people, setting up stalls, hawking their wares, and haggling over prices. The halfling squeezed through the crowd, picked up a box, thought for a moment, then picked up an even larger box, stacked the two boxes together, and climbed on top of them.
He brushed the dust off his clothes, put his hands on his hips, and looked at the bustling crowd in front of him.
One of the people in the crowd recognized the halfling on the high place and exclaimed in surprise:
"Obak above! Yes, it's you?!"
"Who is this halfling?" asked the person next to him.
"It's that unlucky guy I told you about, the one who built a statue and attracted a manticore!" The person who exclaimed turned pale. "How come this guy wasn't eaten by the manticore?!"
Geb glanced at him; the man looked familiar. He must be one of the laborers who built the golem that day.
A few more people in the crowd recognized him and gathered around in disbelief. These few attracted even more people, and soon a small circle of heads surrounded Gebu.
Gebu remained silent, keeping everyone in suspense and accepting the curious gazes of the crowd—the less he spoke, the more noisy the people became, and all sorts of rumors circulated among them.
"I heard that Opak appeared! He turned into a wooden figure and fought a manticore for three hundred rounds!"
"No, the manticore is Obak's messenger, didn't Father Usa say that?"
"It's not a messenger, it's divine punishment. Do you understand? If you don't, don't talk nonsense."
"That halfling is amazing! Even the manticore didn't kill him—it's said he donated tens of thousands of gold coins to O'Bak! He even built a golden statue for the god! And he sacrificed a dwarf!"
"Goodness! Thank you, Oppa!"
Looking at the restless crowd below, Gebu muttered to himself, "These people are barely better than a bunch of goblins. They're chattering like a bunch of chicks." As the number of people in front of him slowly increased, Gebu stepped past the crowd and looked at the swordswoman standing in the corner. The woman seemed uneasy, clutching her arm and nervously looking at Gebu.
Hey, don't be shy!
"Don't rush, it's not your turn to appear yet," Geb said to Doffin using telepathy.
"Feed...feed, feed? Hello?"
After struggling all morning, this woman still couldn't figure out how to use the communication spell. Is this another one of those bastards...? You don't seem stupid.
"...You don't need to feed me, just form sentences in your head." Geb sent another message, giving the swordswoman another chance to reply.
"Like this?"
"Like this."
When will I appear on stage?
"Wait for my signal... Remember to make a cool entrance, and keep quiet. Let me introduce you. Your character is a young and devout knight's squire. Keep your spirits up, understand?"
The swordswoman didn't reply. This guy's getting shy... Don't let me down at this crucial moment, swordswoman.
Seeing that the crowd had gathered sufficiently, Geb raised his voice slightly using his Lesser Illusion and finally spoke:
"Fellow believers of Chifang Town, devout followers of the Lord, allow me, Gebu, an ordinary believer, to share with you an extraordinary experience..."
Gebu began recounting the story of building the idol and encountering the manticore, embellishing it as he described himself as exceptionally great, virtuous, and righteous. He also took a jab at the deceased old carpenter, calling him a despicable villain.
In the middle of the story, when the manticore arrives and everyone scatters, Gebu deliberately amplifies the noise to maximize the performance.
"The scorpion was chasing those innocent workers. I shouted the name of God to him and begged for His forgiveness, which finally turned the scorpion's attention back to me."
"Although I am not a saint, I am prepared to sacrifice myself for others. I cried out to that terrifying beast: 'Manticore, eat me, do not eat the innocent! If the Lord punishes His followers, then I am willing to be the first sacrifice!'" Gebu raised his voice and vividly described the scene of the manticore swooping down on him. When he got to the tense part, the halfling suddenly made a ferocious expression like the lion.
Exclamations erupted from the crowd! A woman clutched her forehead and collapsed, and people rushed to her aid, creating chaos.
"But do not despair! At this critical moment, a young royal knight charged forward, longsword in hand! She praised the glory of the Lord aloud, her face fearless, the rose on her shield gleaming in the bright sun!"
"That's great!"
"Take down that manticore!"
The young man clenched his fist and jumped up to cheer on the female knight in the story. A middle-aged man with a curly beard trembled at the corners of his mouth, his eyes filled with tears.
Several guards who were watching the commotion from the outside of the crowd looked nervous as they saw the crowd's agitation. One of them ran towards the castle, seemingly to call his superior.
Geb glanced at the guy, a barely perceptible smile playing on his lips.
He continued to stir up the crowd's emotions, portraying the female knight as a brave, fearless, and god-loving figure, just like the most clichéd chivalric romance novel, only replacing the dragon with a scorpion lion.
"And so it went... After three hundred rounds of fierce fighting, the scorpion finally couldn't withstand it any longer. It flapped its wings and fled without looking back! Our young knight has triumphed in the Lord's trial! How brave she was, how beautiful she was, how pure she was... Ah, whether you believe it or not, I certainly do!"
Gebu boasted loudly, and outside the crowd, Dao Nu's face turned red to the roots of her ears.
"She's so beautiful!"
"May O'Bak bless the devout female knight!"
"Where is she? I want to have her baby!" a young girl screamed.
Gebu immediately seized the opportunity and shouted, "You asked where this valiant female knight is? You've come to the right place! I'm telling you, she's right here in the middle of us!"
Geb jumped up on the box, did a triple somersault, and landed gracefully, his finger pointing straight at Dove through the crowd!
"She's right there!"
uniform.
Dozens of eyes turned to the woman with the sword at the same time. The crowd held their breath; the air seemed to freeze in anticipation.
The woman with the sword paused for a moment, then coughed lightly.
"Cough..." Her voice was distorted from excessive tension.
"Remember! Be generous!" Geb telepathically instructed.
The swordswoman adjusted her posture, took large strides, and walked to the center of the crowd.
She was tall and slender, with not an ounce of excess fat on her body—her whole body was like a taut bow, and when she walked, she was as graceful as an antelope.
A dark bronze breastplate, dark brown leather, a fine steel longsword and a short sword neatly strapped to her waist, and an oak shield slung across her back, adorned with a slightly worn holy rose design—the emblem of the all-female "Rose Knights" of the Kingdom's Thirteen Holy Knights. The rose on her back was not in full bloom, but merely a bud, signifying that the shield's owner had not yet received a formal knighthood.
Dove stopped in the middle of the crowd, took a deep breath, then took off his helmet, tossed his head, and let his black hair fly in the air.
The crowd was stunned.
She glanced at the crowd with her pale blue eyes, said nothing, but simply touched her shoulders with her hands, bowed her head, and performed a standard religious salute to the emblem on the church spire.
"Obak above, Holy Lord's protection, God's blessing."
She delivered her lines somewhat stiffly, following the script she had rehearsed. Because her words lacked emotion, they sounded cold and solemn.
Just as the crowd was stunned by the female knight's aura, the sound of horses' hooves came from outside the crowd.
Geb and the female knight turned around and saw the town's sheriff, accompanied by several knights and squires, arriving at the center of the square.
"What's going on here?" the sheriff asked in a low voice, a hint of doubt in his eyes.
Hey, here they come. Geb quickly jumped off the box, ran behind the woman with the sword, and pushed her to the sheriff.
"Say whatever I say," Geb texted the woman with the knife.
The woman swallowed hard and read aloud exactly as Gebu instructed:
"I, Dofenennis of Lower Thurns, have come here to undergo trials, inspired by the Lord. Please lead me to the lord of this place."
The woman with the sword paused for a moment; that was all Gebu had to say. Feeling something was missing, she quickly added, "May the Lord's light shine upon your path."
The sheriff sized up the woman before him, taking in her attire. After a moment's thought, he dismounted, took two steps forward, and approached the female knight.
He nodded slightly to the woman.
"May the Lord's mercy protect your peaceful slumber," the sheriff replied politely, his cold expression softening slightly. "Blessed knight's squire, I am Matthew of Wind Valley, former captain of the third squad of the Holy Shield Knights. Our hometown is not far away."
Geb was a little stunned. He hadn't realized that the sheriff would come over and greet the swordswoman. Geb himself didn't know what kind of etiquette existed between human knights, so he didn't know how to react or what to tell the swordswoman to do.
Unexpectedly, Dove did not panic. She gave the man in front of her a military salute, and then placed her hands on her abdomen in a ladylike gesture.
"Matthew of the Holy Shield, it is an honor to meet a warrior from all the kingdoms here. As I said, I would be extremely grateful if you could introduce me and my companions to the lord."
He heard the woman mention her companion, looked around, and then looked down to see the short Gebu. Gebu awkwardly greeted the sheriff, who completely ignored him.
"May I ask what business you have with the acting lord?" the man asked.
"I hope to tell him in person, if you don't mind," the woman with the sword said politely.
The sheriff thought for a moment, then remained silent, seemingly giving his tacit approval. He turned and instructed his servants to disperse the crowd, then walked ahead on foot—the swordswoman and Gebu immediately followed.
"Hey, I didn't expect you to be so polite? I never would have guessed," Gebu said via telepathy.
"Shut the hell up, you damned goblin," the swordswoman suddenly replied skillfully using teleportation.
"You son of a bitch! You're so polite to him, but you're swearing at me!"
"You...don't deserve it!"
Geb secretly tripped Doffin with his wizard's hand, causing the woman to stumble and nearly fall. She turned and glared fiercely at Geb.
Seeing that the sheriff had noticed them, the two men quieted down. And so, the group headed towards the castle deep within the town.
