Chapter 34 The Angel's Feast
Chapter 34 The Angel's Feast
The feather landed on the back of Klein's hand.
Pure white, without a single blemish, with a stiff rachis and soft vanes.
Klein stared at the feather for half a second, then looked up.
Suddenly, a strong wind arose, blowing the lush tree canopy overhead this way and that, breaking branches and leaves, and sending broken branches and shattered vines crashing down from above.
A hungry angel hovered above the treetops...
Its six wings spread wide, blotting out the sky and the sun.
Klein lay on the ground, looking up at the angelic face.
He forgot the pain, forgot that he was still bleeding, and just stared at the thing hovering above his head.
The angel's head looked down at Klein...
Simon burst out of the fog, his boots splashing black mud with every step.
He held the harpoon in his hand, his thumb already on the trigger of the explosive crossbow bolt.
He pulled the trigger.
The crossbow bolt shot out from the side of the fork, trailing a burning fuse and drawing an orange-red trajectory before piercing the hungry angel's side.
The explosion erupted between the wings and ribs, and orange flames engulfed the feathers and petals.
Charred debris fell from the sky like a black snowfall, and a few charred petals landed on the ground, still smoking.
It stretched out its topmost arm and gently patted the blasted area with the back of its bone spur, a very light touch, like brushing dust off clothes.
The flames died down, the charred petals fell off, revealing pink new flesh underneath.
The new flesh is wriggling, growing, and healing.
The wound disappeared within seconds, leaving only a hard, grayish scar.
New petals sprouted from the edges of the scar, more numerous, forming a lush sea of flowers on the chest, redder and more vibrant than the original.
The effect was minimal. Simon's expression turned grave. The explosive bolts were useless against this monster, whose regeneration rate was ten times faster than that of the Maw Hunter.
The Hungry Angel lowered its head, its emerald eyes looking at Simon. There was no anger, no pain, no emotion that any human could understand in those eyes.
Its wings flapped at a slower pace as it descended, now only about ten meters from Klein.
The speed suddenly increased, and Klein, knowing his days were numbered, closed his eyes in despair...
boom--
Its massive body swept over Klein's head, its target not Klein, but a large tree not far behind him.
The tree trunk was very thick, and its bark was covered with dark green moss and grayish-white mycelium.
A shadow hung upside down in the shade of the tree canopy, its grayish-white wings folded up, wrapping around its slender body, its limbs clinging to the trunk like a spider, its claws deeply embedded in the bark.
The face emerged from the gap in the wing membrane. It was a human face with all the features, the corners of the mouth turned up, forming a stiff, frozen smile, and the dark pupils reflected two points of eerie green light in the sunlight.
The Laughing Bat, the monster that killed Anthony.
The Hungry Angel leaned forward, moving slowly but with an unstoppable force, like a boulder sliding down a mountain, swooping down on the Smiling Bat with terrifying momentum!
The smiling bat loosened its claws and fell from the tree trunk. Its wing membranes opened, grayish-white and translucent, covered with fine blood vessels. The bony spurs along the edges of the wing membranes opened up like sharp sickles.
It wanted to glide, but the hungry angel's arm was already outstretched.
Both arms opened at the same time. The uppermost hands grabbed the smiling bat's wing membrane, and the grayish-white arms easily pierced through the membrane. The lower hands gripped the smiling bat's torso, the joints tightening and sinking into the flesh.
The smiling bat opened its mouth, emitting a piercing sonic screech. The corners of its mouth were still upturned, and the smile was still on its face, but the light in its eyes had changed, turning into fear.
The two monsters crashed to the ground, causing the ground to shake violently. A large crater was created in the soft mud, and mud and bits of flesh splattered everywhere.
The hungry angel pinned down the smiling bat, its six wings spreading wide to cover the entire opening of the pit.
The injured Klein was only a few steps away from the crater. He could see the flowers on the chest of the Hungry Angel churning, the petals curling outwards, tearing open the flesh along with the skin, and the ribs splitting apart to reveal the black hole.
The edges of the cave entrance were made of bright red flesh, spiraling inwards in circles, each circle filled with barbed teeth. Thick saliva dripped from between the teeth, landing on the smiling bat's face and hissing.
The laughing bat struggled fiercely, its claws waving in the air, its scythe-like bone spikes slicing white marks on the hungry angel's arm.
There was no blood; the Hungry Angel's arms were too hard, and the bone spurs could only leave shallow scratches on the skin.
The laughing bat opened its mouth, revealing two rows of serrated teeth, and bit down on the hungry angel's wrist. But the hungry angel did not let go; instead, its arm tightened even more.
Monsters are killing each other, no!
Simon instinctively glanced at Brienne, who was terrified inside the birdcage. He recalled the Hungry Angel's past behavior, and his mind instantly came up with the correct answer:
It targets abyssal creatures, including heretics, as its primary targets, showing little interest in humans.
Before the battle between the two monsters was over, Simon suddenly rushed into the fray, grabbed Klein by the collar, and dragged him off the ground.
Klein, who had survived the ordeal, was so weak in the legs that he could barely stand. Simon simply put his arm around Klein's shoulder and dragged him backward.
"Hurry up!"
Klein was dragged a few steps by him, and stumbled as his feet stepped on the slippery fungal carpet.
He looked back and saw that the Hungry Angel had already stuffed the Laughing Bat's waist into its chest mouth.
The barbed teeth bit into the smiling bat's waist and abdomen, and a cracking sound came from the gaps in the petals.
The smiling bat's body suddenly stiffened, the smile on its face vanished instantly, its limbs twitched, its claws scratched wildly in the air, and thick blood squeezed out from between its teeth, flowing down the hungry angel's chest.
Simon dragged Klein into the depths of the woods, leaned against a large tree, and gasped for breath.
A deafening roar came from the direction of the crater.
The smiling bat, a despicable sneak attacker, is but a weak bat before absolute power.
Its slender body was bitten in half, and thick blood almost flowed out, nearly filling the large pit.
Its bat-like wings were casually punctured by the hungry angel, and its proud bone spurs were broken. It kept wailing, but it couldn't stop the angel from eating.
The Hungry Angel was not a picky eater. It toyed with the smiley bat's shattered body, its large mouth hidden in its chest opening and closing, devouring the smiley bat's abdomen clean.
The smiling bat's body convulsed in agony, yet it remained alive. The blessing of the abyss forced it to watch helplessly as its body was slowly devoured.
It finally used both hands to tear open the back of the smiling bat's neck, and its gray fingers took out the precious piece of flesh that was evidence of its crime, stuffing it into its large mouth.
A piercing shriek echoed through the forest, and it mimicked the posture of the smiling bat, wrapping its massive body with its six wings.
The next moment, to everyone's astonishment, its figure disappeared into the jungle, and without careful observation, its outline was completely invisible.
After eating the flesh that served as evidence of the smiley bat's crimes, it gained the smiley bat's ability to "mimic"!
